On this day in 1954, Roger Bannister became the first person to run a mile in under four minutes. Bannister's official time was 3:59.4. Until his breaching of this particular world record, members of the medical profession had considered it extremely dangerous for an athlete to attempt to run this fast. Bannister, a medical student at Oxford, proved them wrong. Bannister's record didn't last for long, however. By 1957, 16 other runners had broken the same mark.
