On this day in 1890, American toxicologist and biochemist Rolla Neil Harger was born. Harger was responsible for creating the world's first device that measured blood alcohol content in humans. he called the device the Drunkometer. When a person breathed into the device, the alcohol in his or her breath would be changed to vinegar, or acetic acid, that would alter the color of crystals in the device. How inebriated a person was could be determined by the amount of crystals that changed color. Harger gave the patent for his invention to Indiana University, where he was working when he invented the Drunkometer.
