- Feel the hotel doorknobs with the back of your hand.
If the knob is cool, open the door and escape via the nearest stairwell, keeping low if the hallway is smoke-filled. - If the doorknob is hot, wedge wet towels under the door to keep smoke out.
Cover your head with wet towels and sheets to protect yourself from smoke inhalation; you can also use the towel to signal rescue personnel at the window. - If the air is getting worse, try to kick through the closet wall into the adjacent room.
Knock on the wall until you hear a hollow sound, which indicates the absence of wall studs, then use both feet to kick through the drywall.
