Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac was born on this day in 1658 in France. The explorer and colonial leader mapped much of the Great Lakes region of North America. He was also placed in charge of northern French forts such as Michilimackinac. Cadillac soon gained permission from King Louis XIV to establish a fort farther south on the Great Lakes in a fertile, easily defended location at the straits known as le détroit near lower Lake Huron. The settlement became known as Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit, which evolved into the city of Detroit, Michigan.
