Velcro was put on the market on this day in 1978. The name "Velcro" is derived from the French words velour (velvet) and crochet (hook); inventor George de Mestral got the idea for the closure one day after pulling burrs out of his dog's fur and off his own pants. The hooks in the burrs snagged the dog's coat and the fabric of his pants, giving de Mestral the idea for a simple system of hooks and loops as a zipper replacement.
