The greatest landslide in North American history occurred on this day in 1903. On the outskirts of Alberta, Canada, near the town of Frank, Turtle Mountain collapsed, spreading more than 80 million tons of limestone across the town and burying the entrance to a mine.

It took only 100 seconds for the mass to fall, taking out over a mile of the Canadian Pacific Railroad, destroying more than three-quarters of the homes, and trapping miners in the shaft. Fourteen hours later, 17 miners dug themselves free through 36 feet of coal and clay.
