Margaret Thatcher was sworn in as Great Britain's first female prime minister on this day in 1979. She also became the longest-serving British prime minister, presiding until her resignation in 1990. Known as the "Iron Lady," Thatcher led Britain to victory against Argentina in the Falklands War in 1982, and she won two reelections, despite the poor economy and high unemployment rate in Britain.
