On this day in 1986, Canadian Patrick Morrow became the first person to climb each of the "Seven Summits," the highest mountains on each continent. Dick Bass, an American, climbed seven mountains in 1985, but he climbed Mount Kosciusko in Australia, which, although Australia's tallest peak, is not as tall as Mount Puncak Jaya in Indonesia. As part of Oceania, Indonesia's mountain technically counts as the highest in that region. The other peaks are Mount Everest in Asia, Mount Aconcarua in South America, Mount McKinley in North America, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, Mount Elbrus in Europe, and Mount Vinson Massif in Antarctica.
