On this day in 1976 the National Air and Space Museum opened on the Mall in Washington, D.C. The ribbon cutting was activated by a signal from the spacecraft Viking, which was en route to Mars. The museum is a vital center for research into the history, science, and technology of aviation and space flight. It maintains the largest collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft in the world. Housed at the museum are hundreds of artifacts, including the Wright brothers' 1903 Flyer, the Spirit of St. Louis, the Apollo 11 command module, and a lunar rock sample that visitors can touch.
