Charleston, South Carolina, was rocked by an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale on this day in 1886. The earthquake, which was the first recorded in American history, lasted for less than one minute. In the span of time, 60 people died, and the city was severely damaged. Nearly 300 aftershocks followed in the subsequent 35 years.
