Triathlon Hall-of-Famer Dave Scott was born on this day in 1954. Between 1980 and 1987 Scott won the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii six times and placed second overall in 1994 at age 40. The Ironman competition is a race in which competitors swim 2.4 miles in the open ocean, bike 112 miles, and run a marathon (26.2 miles), all within 17 hours. Hailed as the most grueling triathlon in existence, competitors from around the world attend the annual even in Hawaii.
