How to Survive a High-Rise Hotel Fire
____________________________________________________________________

  1. Feel the hotel doorknobs with the back of your hand.
If the knob is cool, open the door and escape via the nearest stairwell, keeping low if the hallway is smoke-filled.

  2. If the doorknob is hot, wedge wet towels under the door to keep smoke out.
Cover your head with wet towels and sheets to protect yourself from smoke inhalation; you can also use the towel to signal rescue personnel at the window.

  3. If the air is getting worse, try to kick through the closet wall into the adjacent room.
Knock on the wall until you hear a hollow sound, which indicates the absence of wall studs, then use both feet to kick through the drywall.

They forgot the important step. Try to get a room on one of the lower levels, so the ladders and stuff can actually REACH you.

Do you remember the big hotel fire at the MGM in Las Vegas in '80? We had good friends of our family there at the time. They were on one of the floors near the very top. I remember her telling me there were times when they actually thought they might jump, because the thought of dieing in a fire was too terrifying. But they held it together and did the things on your list. They got towels wet and kept them around their heads and tuck at the bottom of the door. They also were credited with saving something like 7 people from certain death. Some they dragged into their room when they heard screaming in the halls and some they talked out of jumping from an adjoining balcony.

Personally i like the idea of just not going too high up myself. ;)
