On this day in 1970, 20 million Americans demonstrated for environmental preservation on the first Earth Day to be celebrated in the United States. Earth Day 1970 brought together people from both sides of the political spectrum and from all walks of life and united them in the common cause of preserving our environment and natural resources. This celebration, consisting of rallies and protests across the nation, led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom--the highest honor given to civilians in the United States.
