Robert H. Goddard successfully launched the world's first liquid-fueled rocket on this day in 1926. Testing at his lab in Auburn, Massachusetts, Goddard sent the ten-foot-tall rocket, which was made out of thin pipes and fueled by liquid oxygen and gasoline, into the air for 2.5 seconds, reaching 60 mph and an altitude of 41 feet. Goddard's early experiments would be the groundwork for all the technology that led to the realization of space travel. The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center outside Washington, D.C., is named in honor of his advancements in the field.
