The incomparable escape artist Ehrich Weiss, aka Harry Houdini, was born on this day in 1874 in Budapest, Hungary. Throughout his career, Houdini offered a longstanding reward to anyone who could successfully restrain him. He escaped from handcuffs, leg irons, water torture cells giant footballs, and prison cells, among other creative restraints. A blow to his abdomen precipitated his death in 1926. Houdini had claimed to be able to sustain punches to the midsection without any bodily injury, but was caught off-guard by several powerful blows and later died from peritonitis.
