The RMS Titanic struck an iceberg and ruptured its hull on this day in 1912. Designed by Irish shipbuilder William Pirrie, the 883-foot vessel was considered by many to be unsinkable. The Titanic was on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City when it struck the iceberg at full speed and ruptured five of its hull's 16 compartments. At 2:20 a.m. on April 15, the Titanic sank in the north Atlantic. Seven hundred eleven passengers managed to survive the harsh conditions of the Atlantic Ocean until they were rescued. The story has lived on in a variety of books and movies, including James Cameron's 1997 Oscar-winning film, Titanic.
