Ceremonies marking the opening of the golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco occurred on this day in 1937. the bridge has been called one of the greatest engineering marvels in the world, in large part because of the violent surf in which the bridge was built. Gaining the financial support to build the structure during the Depression took nearly four times as long as the construction of the bridge. In total, the project was 21 years in the making. Only 11 workers died during the bridge's construction, largely due to the large safety net that Joseph Strauss, the bridge's engineer, designed. Of the 30 men who fell, 19 landed safely in the net.
