Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, was born on this day in 1944. Born and raised in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, Giuliani became mayor in 1994 after unsuccessfully campaigning for the post in 1989. He came to national and international prominence after his courageous leadership in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks in New York City. During his eight years in office, Giuliani successfully lowered New York's crime and murder rates by 40 percent, turning New York into one of America's safest large cities.
