The Transcontinental Express train arrived in San Francisco on this day in 1876. the train had departed from New York 83 hours earlier, meaning that Americans could now traverse the nation in less than four days. Trains had been running on the transcontinental tracks since 1869, but not at this speed--it still took just under a week to make the journey before the advent of the express train.
