The Statue of Liberty was delivered to New York City on this day in 1885. Lady Liberty was supposed to arrive from France in time for the American Revolution's centennial in 1876, but work was delayed for nine years because of financial concerns. Upon delivery, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi's statue, reduced to 350 pieces for shipping, was reassembled with great fanfare.
