On June 18, 1983, the Space Shuttle Challenger took off on its second flight, carrying the first American woman in space, Sally Ride. In 1978, Ride was selected by NASA to be one of the first six female astronauts, and she went on to complete two missions in the Space Shuttle program. The STS-7 mission, Ride's first flight into space, deployed several satellites and conducted medical experiments, including a study of the nausea that many astronauts experience in space. One of the other astronauts on this mission, Norm Thargard, would become the first American astronaut to live aboard the Russian Mir space station in 1995.
