On this day in 1611, explorer Henry Hudson was abandoned by mutineers in the bay that would later bear his name. Hudson had set out from London in April 1610 on his fourth voyage to find a northwest passage to Asia. After traveling to Iceland, he proceeded through Hudson Strait, into the bay. He traveled down the eastern shore and entered James Bay; having found no outlet to the Pacific Ocean, Hudson and his crew were forced to weather the Arctic winter. Tempers flared, and disagreements between crew and captain were rife as some crewmen suspected Hudson of playing favorites. Once the homeward voyage had begun, several of the crew mutinied and cast Hudson, his son John, and seven others adrift in a small open boat. Although the crew returned the ship to London, Hudson and his companions were never found.
