On this day in 1998, Benoite Lecomte set out from Hyannis, Massachusetts, to swim across the Atlantic Ocean; he completed his 71-day journey on September 25 at Quiberon, France. On his journey, he would swim 3,736 nautical miles. He was protected from animals by an electric force field, and he had two sailors on a boat guiding him along the way. He swam six to eight hours per day, though while resting his crew monitored to make certain that they were not drifting eastward to assist him. Much of the motivation for his journey was to raise money and awareness for cancer research.
