- Extinguish any cigarettes.
Many hazardous chemicals are highly combustible. - Turn off the heat, air conditioning, and blower fans.
These systems will bring contaminated outside air into the car. - Shut the windows.
- Cover your mouth.
Do not wet the coverings: Some gases and vapors are attracted to water. - Drive slowly (less than 15 mph) uphill and upwind of the spill site.
- Abandon your car.
When you are at least a half mile away, in an unpopulated and low-traffic area, leave your car, which is now contaminated. Do not touch any external surface. Run uphill and upwind of your car. - Inform authorities that your vehicle and possibly your person are contaminated.
