On this day in 1860, Annie Oakley was born in Darke County, Ohio. As a youth, her excellent marksmanship earned her enough money by hunting animals to pay off the mortgage on her struggling family's home. Later, in Cincinnati, she met Frank Butler, another sharpshooter; they married in 1882. They had a traveling show together, displaying their shooting skills before such people as Sioux Chief Sitting Bull and German Crown Prince William. Oakley was paralyzed in a train accident in 1901, which effectively ended her career. The events of Oakley's life were later memorialized in the 1946 Broadway musical Annie Get Your Gun, which returned to Broadway in 1999.
