In 1512, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon received permission for an exploration of the northern Caribbean. The then-governor of Hispaniola wanted to explore and colonize the island of Bimini, where there was rumored to be a river with healing properties--a "Fountain of Youth." On this day in 1513, Ponce de Leon's expedition departed from Puerto Rico. About a month later, he landed on the coast of Florida, claiming it for Spain. He spent several months exploring the coastline of Western Florida before returning to Puerto Rico in September, but he never found the Fountain of Youth.
