How to Escape from a Bear
_____________________________________________

"I don't have to be faster than the bear,
just faster than YOU."

  1. If you see a bear but it does not see you, make your presence known and back away.
Talk, loudly, clap, sing, or call out. There is no guaranteed minimum safe distance form a bear: the farther, the better. If you are in a car, remain in your vehicle. Do not get out, even for a quick photo. Keep your windows up. Do not impede the bear from crossing the road.

  2. If the bear looks as if it is about to attack, do not run--remain still.
Remember, bears can run much faster than humans, and bears can climb trees. However, documented attacks show that an attack by a mother black bear often ends when the person stops fighting.

  3. If you are lying still and the bear attacks, strike back with anything you can.
Go for the bear's eyes or its snout.

true story.

last night i dreamt i was at my office picnic. there were wild animals there, including a black bear. i said, "OMG it's a bear! ... i read about this on a friend's livejournal about what to do if you see a bear. ... now what did it say?" i was trying to remember, and i clapped and started to sing something.

but all i could think about in my dream as the black bear was walking calmly toward me was thinking that the stuff your wrote was for brown bears, not black bears. then as the bear came up to me and looked in my face, so i pet the bear and hugged it and thought, "i'm sure the survival tips didn't say to pet the bear and hug his head!"

and he (she?) went away.

just thought i'd share that your information was put to good use. if it was a brown bear though, i'd have been better prepared... in my dream. ;)

but now, having re-read the entry, i didn't actually FIGHT the black bear. so maybe the key to warding off a mother black bear is to give her a hug. lol

(you're welcome.)
