The SOS distress signal was used for the the first time on this day in 1909, by the Cunard Line ship Slavenia that wrecked off the Azores, 800 miles west of Portugal. Signals were picked up by nearby ships, which promptly began a rescue operation. The emergency code had been established as the international distress call by organizations participating in the Berlin Radio Conference several years earlier, in October 1906. The Slavania was the fist ship to actually use it.
