Shake and Bake!
Jul. 22nd, 2010 01:04 pmWell, I did it.
I waited until about 7:00pm when the temperatures dropped to a chilly 80° outside before strapping on my new shoes and going out for a run. I strapped on my Garmin Forerunner (see Kathy Brown‘s blog for a good review), took a swig of water, and started my iPod. My warmup started out pretty well but I soon started getting that spasmy/crampy feeling in both of my inner calves at the same time. I realized that it was the shoes.
Because they are “corrective”–meaning they have stiffer soles on the insides of the heel to correct my pronation–they were causing me to use muscles in my legs that I normally don’t. I kept stretching out my heel as I walked/ran and tried not to push it too much. You see, I’ve always been plagued by leg cramps and the last thing I wanted to do was fling myself in someone’s front yard while screaming in pain and clutching my calf.
I’ll stick with just collapsing on their grass in sweaty heap of exhaustion.
Anyway, I think I did about a half mile, maybe more. Unfortunately my Forerunner ran out of charge about 5 minutes into the workout so I don’t have any accurate stats on distance and pace. Luckily my iPod did not suffer the same fate.
