Recently I ordered a set of  bluetooth headphones from Amazon and I started thinking about what I listen to while exercising. For me the answer is easy.

When I first started bringing an iPod with me to the gym, I was listening to playlists that I created in iTunes. They were mostly classical rock songs with some newer stuff. Basically anything I owned that had a good driving beat. Unfortunately I’m not a big music person so I’ve never owned a lot of music, but I had enough to make it work. Then I discovered podcasts.

Wow, you mean I can listen and learn stuff while I work out? Without being limited to whatever is currently on the radio? That’s a big ole awesome cake frosted in awesome! I listen to so many podcasts now that I hardly ever listen to music anymore.

Here are some of my favorite podcasts in no particular order:

  • Two Gomers Run A Half-Marathon (& Two Gomers Run A Marathon) - These are two separate podcasts put out by a pair of friends from Wisconsin. They both decided to take up running, gave themselves a goal and started podcasting about it. They should have a new goal coming out in the Fall.
  • Podcasts for Running - Created by a 43-year old guy who did the Couch-to-5k program. It’s a lot of club/techno type music but he breaks it down and tells you when to run and when to walk. He has a podcast for each week of the C-2-5k program.
  • NPR: Culturtopia, Planet Money, Science Friday, etc. – Lots of good information.
  • Slice of SciFi – News and commentary on the world of science fiction
  • How Stuff Works – This is a family of podcasts (CarStuff, Stuff You Should Know, Stuff You Missed In History, etc) from the people at the HowStuffWorks.com website. This is probably my favorite group of podcasts.
  • Technorama – Two guys talking all things tech.
  • The Geekcast – More geeky goodness.
  • Watchers of Anarchy – A podcast for fans of the FX show “Sons of Anarchy”.
  • This Week In Lotus – IBM Lotus software podcast hosted by Darren & Lisa Duke.
  • The Taking Notes Podcast – More from the Yellowverse. Hosted by Bruce Elgort & Julian Robichaux.
  • The 1352 Report – A technology podcast by Sean Burgess, Bruce Elgort, Jess Stratton and Carl Tyler.

Well, that should be enough to get you started. So tell me, what do YOU listen to while exercising?

Try the Podcasts for Running (http://www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/) one. You can download it from the website (linked) or iTunes. He doesn't talk all the time, just tell you when your warm up is over or when to run or walk. If you can handle that you can probably listen to a voice podcast. I like anything that can take my mind off of how bad my shins are hurting. ;)
