On this day in 1970, 127 runners started but only 55 finished the first ever New York City Marathon. Organizers Fred Lebow and Vince Chiappetta were given $1,000 from the New York Road Runners Club to organize and promote the event. The marathon, a 26.2-mile event, is considered one of the most grueling physical endurance trials the human body can accomplish. Of the 30,000 participants in today's New York City Marathon, the top finishers complete the course is slightly more than two hours.
