How to Escape from a Mountain Lion
________________________________________________________________________

  1. Try to make yourself appear bigger by opening your coat.
The lion is less likely to attack a larger animal.

  2. If the lion still behaves aggressively, throw stones.
Convince the lion you are not prey.

  3. If you are attacked, fight back.
Most mountain lions are small enough that an average-size human can ward off an attack. Do not curl up and play dead.

Also - don't ever turn your back and run. That will make you look like prey and they'll chase.* Back away slowly if you can, keeping an eye on them. (But be careful where you're going - it won't help if you back off a cliff!)

*Not turning your back on any large cat (and why) is what we were told was the SOP for zookeepers when I was an intern at the Bronx Zoo. The keepers go in, put the food down, and back out. Captive cat <> tame.
