How to Safely Ram a Car out of Your Way
________________________________________

  1. Fasten your seat belt.

  2. Disable your air bag, if you can.

  3. Keep the car at a slow speed to maintain control.
Just before impact, increase your speed to greater than 30 mph to deliver a disabling crunch to the obstacle car.

  4. Ram the front passenger side of your car into the obstacle car's rear wheel, at a 90-degree angle (the cars should be perpendicular).
If you are unable to hit the car in the rear, go for the front corner.

  5. When the car spins out of your way, hit the gas and keep moving.

This will come in very handy after the zombie apocalypse when the highways are lined with abandoned vehicles.

in what situation, exactly, would one need to ram a car out of one's way? are we talking stuck on the train tracks here? or what?!?

Honestly the only situation I can think of is the zombie one. Although I guess you could have a critically wounded person in the car and another car is broken down/abandoned in the road where this might come in handy. But I think most of these posts fall more into the interesting/entertainment category rather than the "you must know how to do this" category.

The only situations that come to mind for me are:
- a car that's in front of you, which lost control and spun out because of weather. If that's the case, chances are you won't have much better control over your car to ram them out of the way as described (but it's possible you'd have decent traction, if they hit a slick spot coming from another direction).

-Much less likely (I would hope) is some maniac blocking your way who would do you grievous bodily harm if you didn't get the heck out of Dodge. Of course this might be more likely during a zombie apocalypse.

ETA: Or if you go for a spin out on a race track. There, it'd be a real possibility.

Should I be disturbed that I already knew this?

Unfortunately, this doesn't help if the car is behind you at an angle. I did briefly consider taking out a fence at the local nursery at that time.
